From Cognitive Engagement to Enhanced Learning Outcomes:
Using the ICAP framework for Optimal Classroom Design
The ICAP framework (Chi & Wylie 2014) offers an approach to classroom design that promotes greater student engagement with class content, no matter the subject area. The cognitive and learning sciences have demonstrated that student engagement behaviors are predictive of learning gains. The more engaged students are, the more they learn. But, what do we mean by engagement? In this workshop we will explore the four classroom modes of overt, observable student behaviors in the ICAP framework: passive, active, constructive and interactive. Participants will have the opportunity to both evaluate their current classroom designs as well as develop new classroom strategies to promote greater student engagement and enhanced learning outcomes.
